Day 4 – Eidos

Day 4 - Eidos
Dissertation preparation has started and I still haven’t gotten my Eidos down path. My research and readings were all about solutions and not questions according to my lecturer.

Food and Urbanism is a broad topic and I need to have a wholistic driving question as a frame. Some of the things I was looking at which I was not able to translate were:

1.) Obesity_Urbanity_Health
(How can architecture help in the apparent obesity link in living in Cities?)
2.) The City of Perth is quite monofunctional like most post war cities, i.e it is governed by zoning and not much other uses resulting in dead space and segration of life. Furthermore the location and current design of food courts are in such a way that they act as vacuums, drawing people from the street and to either below street level or above street. Albert Pope calls this a centripetal figure in his analysis of post war cities (Great diagrams explaining them). I guess the overall direction of this observation is how can we better design and locate eateries in the City of Perth to bring life and community back. This may be a weak reasoning, I am still getting my head around it. 🙂
3.) Food is so globally connected, that we are all each made out of atoms from China, USA, Japan etc. We import almost everything from each other that there is a disconnect between the city and agriculture. Furthermore this dependency is dangerous as if one country experiences disease or famine, our food supply gets affected. Locally, we do not support our farmers, who have been placed in periphery due to modernity principles of zoning. (city and agriculture being seperate entities) This leads to the eidos of: The increasing rate of population and growth means there will be food scarcity in the future. This leads to research in urban agriculture as a viable solution. Thus far this is perhaps the clearest but I really dont want to do this, as i find it boring lol.

Anyways it was good to get down my thoughts thus far. What do you guys think? Oh and Thanks for reading if you got down this far! lol

Apple Iphone 4: Try And Catch The Rainbow

Apple Iphone 4: Try And Catch The Rainbow
Radio Shack and Apple want us all to be so desperate to get the Iphone 4 that they’ve manufactured scarcity for the product. Hence the long lines in front of the Apple stores and Radio Shack for this much sought after commodity. I pity the fools who are up at 7am to line up and present this picture of pseudo popularity of the Iphone. When are people going to realize they’ve been duped once again?

So if people step up to a Radio Shack today or tomorrow they’re going to see this and go into panic mode. It’s a setup folks. Apple has made certain that scarcity proves demand thus playing a psychological game with us to promote their product. I for one could care less to own an I-Phone. I’ve used my friends Iphone a couple of times and both she and I find it quite annoying how it is very easy to make a mistake and touch the wrong area of the screen. Touch screens are not all they’re cracked up to be. I know that a phone is not a camera but my Sony Ericsson has a better camera than this gadget.

The fact that AT&T is the sole carrier for the I-Phone is also worrisome and people don’t realize just how bad the service is. They can’t even provide a proper 3G network much less reduce the number of dropped calls on the network. Verizon is no better with their customer service being as bad or worse than Dell computers. That company has an exclusive contract to be the carrier of the Goober….er Gooble….er…Google phone. Is this all the makings of a very bad trend?

42 years later after the Rolling Stones came out with the song "You Can’t Always Get What You Want" the reverse has happened to society. You can’t always get what you need but you can get what you want because someone says you need it.
